The President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Bright Idahosa, has praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its increasing support for scrabble, describing the development as a positive sign for the growth and sustainability of the sport in Nigeria.
Idahosa made the remarks following the inclusion of scrabble in the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games currently taking place in Lagos.
According to him, the decision by the NSC to feature scrabble in the youth-centred competition reflects a deliberate effort to promote talent discovery and provide opportunities for athletes in non-traditional sports.
He noted that the initiative would help broaden participation in the game and create a pathway for emerging players to showcase their abilities on a national stage.
"The inclusion of scrabble in the National Intermediate Games is a major milestone for our sport. It demonstrates the Commission's commitment to developing a wider range of sports and identifying talents across the country," Idahosa said.
The NSF president expressed confidence that the renewed attention being given to scrabble would strengthen the case for its return to the National Sports Festival, scheduled to hold in Enugu.
He stated that scrabble had consistently contributed to Nigeria's sporting success internationally and deserved a place at the country's flagship multi-sport event.
Idahosa also commended the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, for his leadership and commitment to sports development.
He described Olopade as a reform-minded administrator who has continued to engage stakeholders and create opportunities for various sports to thrive.
According to him, the DG's support has reassured stakeholders that the Commission is determined to ensure every sport receives the attention needed to succeed.
The NSF boss further appreciated the Commission's efforts in facilitating Team Nigeria's participation at the Causeway Championship in Thailand, noting that the gesture boosted the morale of athletes and officials.
He said the support demonstrated the NSC's readiness to back Nigerian athletes competing on the global stage and promote sporting excellence.
Idahosa also highlighted scrabble's achievements over the years, noting that the sport remains one of Nigeria's most successful disciplines at the world championship level.
He called on government agencies and corporate organisations to invest more in the game, stressing that sustained support would help maintain Nigeria's position among the world's leading scrabble nations.
The NSF president reaffirmed the federation's commitment to collaborating with the NSC to expand the reach of the sport, nurture young talents and sustain Nigeria's dominance in international scrabble competitions.
He expressed optimism that the current momentum would usher in a new phase of growth for scrabble and create greater opportunities for players across the country.
The collaboration between the federation and sports authorities highlights a progressive path toward reclaiming top-tier recognition for the sport domestically. With ongoing institutional backing and international exposure, Nigerian scrabble is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge. Increased investments will ensure that grassroots talent continues to emerge and thrive on global platforms.
