NSC hails Nigeria’s weightlifting stars after 29-medal feat in Egypt

The National Sports Commission has praised Team Nigeria’s weightlifting contingent following an outstanding performance at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championship held in Ismailia, Egypt.

Nigeria finished the competition with an impressive total of 29 medals, made up of 14 gold, 13 silver, and two bronze medals, reaffirming the country’s dominance on the continental stage.

Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko, commended the athletes for their determination, discipline, and strong representation of the nation throughout the championship.

He described the medal haul as a major achievement for Nigerian sports and a reflection of the country’s growing presence in international competitions.

Director General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade, also applauded the team, stating that the success recorded in Egypt highlights the dedication of the athletes, coaches, and officials working behind the scenes.

According to him, the performance should serve as motivation for other Nigerian athletes aiming to excel on the global stage.

Nigeria’s women were among the standout performers, finishing third overall on the continent with 12 gold and six silver medals.

In the 48kg category, Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed three gold medals, while Onome Omolola Didih secured another three gold medals in the 53kg division.

Commonwealth champion Rafiatu Folashade Lawal continued her dominance in the 58kg class with three gold medals, as Liadi Taiwo added three gold medals in the 77kg event.

Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele contributed three silver medals in the 63kg category, while Mary Osijo earned three silver medals in the 79kg division after recording a total lift of 211kg.

In the men’s events, Favour Omovigho Agboro won one gold and two silver medals in the 65kg class, while Edidiong Joseph Umoafia also claimed one gold and two silver medals in the 71kg category.

Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji added three silver medals in the 79kg division, while Lucky Joseph rounded off Nigeria’s campaign with two bronze medals in the +110kg category.

This outstanding continental achievement highlights the immense talent and potential within the Nigerian weightlifting community. With continued investment and structural support from the National Sports Commission, these athletes are well-positioned to maintain their dominance and secure more laurels in future global tournaments. The collective effort of the lifters and technical staff underlines a bright future for the sport in the country.
