The National Sports Commission (NSC) has dissolved the boards of six National Para Sports Federations as part of preparations for a new electoral process aimed at strengthening governance and accountability within the country's para sports system.
The decision, which takes immediate effect, affects the Amputee Football Federation, Para Athletics Federation, Para Powerlifting Federation, Para Swimming Federation, Para Soccer Federation, and Para Volleyball Federation.
According to the Commission, the move is designed to facilitate a transparent, credible, and seamless election process that will usher in new leadership across the federations.
The outgoing boards, which were inaugurated on July 20, 2022, have been commended for their contributions to the development of para sports in Nigeria. The NSC expressed appreciation to the presidents, vice presidents, board members, and other stakeholders for their service and commitment during their tenure.
As part of the transition arrangements, all dissolved board members have been directed to hand over federation assets, official documents, records, and responsibilities to their respective Secretaries-General. The Secretaries-General will manage the affairs of the federations until elections are conducted and new boards are inaugurated.
The Commission stated that the dissolution aligns with its broader agenda of promoting good governance, institutional efficiency, and accountability within Nigerian sports administration.
The NSC also reassured athletes, coaches, technical officials, sponsors, and partners that the operations of the affected federations will continue uninterrupted during the transition period.
It added that details regarding the timetable, procedures, and modalities for the forthcoming elections will be announced through its official communication channels in due course.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to creating a conducive environment for sports development while ensuring that leadership structures across federations reflect the principles of fairness, transparency, and credibility.
This strategic restructuring marks a significant turning point for the governance of para sports in the country. By ensuring a seamless administrative transition under institutional watch, the governing body safeguards the immediate interests of athletes and administrative stakeholders alike. The upcoming electoral cycle remains highly anticipated as a mechanism to permanently solidify administrative excellence and fair play.
