The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has congratulated the Nigeria U-19 Cricket Team for their remarkable win over New Zealand at the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.
The Nigerian Junior Female Yellow Greens, as the U-19 team is affectionately known, stunned the cricket world with a two-run victory over cricket powerhouse New Zealand on Monday.
The game, which many viewed as a battle between underdogs and giants, was delayed for about two hours due to heavy rainfall before the Nigerian girls shocked one of the tournament's top favorites.
Reacting to the team's performance, the Director General described the victory as a historic one that will be remembered as one of the biggest upsets in the sport's history.
"I am very excited for our U-19 cricket team, and this victory is worth celebrating for many reasons. The girls showed resilience, which is the true Nigerian spirit and patriotism, to upset a cricket giant like New Zealand," he said.
"The result is also a testament to the work being done by the Nigeria Cricket Federation under its President, Uyi Akpata, to elevate the standard of the sport in Nigeria. This is why the National Sports Commission, under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko, will continue to support the Federation."
However, the DG urged the girls not to get carried away after their win against New Zealand and encouraged them to view the victory as a stepping stone toward even greater achievements.
"I am confident that our girls can go all the way and shock the entire cricket world after the display they put on against New Zealand. That is the focus of the team. Once again, congratulations to the girls."
The historic victory over New Zealand has now placed the Nigerian girls in pole position, topping their Group C standings at the ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup 2025.
