Speaking on the upcoming 2025 Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), Dikko described the event as a landmark initiative designed to discover and nurture young talent from grassroots communities across the country. According to him, NUGA 2025 will serve as a platform for key stakeholders in the sports and education sectors to collaborate and build a sustainable roadmap for sports development in Nigeria.
Dikko emphasized the transformative power of the tournament, praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and dedication to youth development through sports. “We expect NUGA 2025 to unearth young, talented Nigerians whose potential has remained untapped, giving them the opportunity to compete on the global stage,” he said.
He added that the event comes at a critical time when the country must harness its youthful population and channel their energy into productive ventures, including job creation through sports.
Dikko also highlighted that what makes NUGA 2025 unique is its structured roadmap and the strong backing of the Tinubu administration. He noted that the tournament’s long-term impact would go beyond a single event, empowering youth and preparing them to become international champions. “NUGA 2025 is designed to promote peace and unity, especially in communities affected by division,” he added.
Acknowledging that the tournament had lost some national visibility in recent years, Dikko assured that the government is implementing renewed strategies to restore its relevance and impact.
“Now that it’s our responsibility as a government, we are working hard to reposition NUGA as a platform to empower university students, create jobs, and drive wealth distribution among the youth,” he said.
He urged participating universities to give their best and uphold discipline throughout the competition, stressing that NUGA could be a springboard to global opportunities for student-athletes. According to Dikko, the values of hard work, discipline, and teamwork demonstrated at the games could have life-changing effects on the participants.
The NSC Chairman concluded by calling for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that NUGA 2025 becomes a turning point in Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable sports development and youth empowerment. He stressed that collective action is crucial to unlocking the full potential of the nation's youth and positioning Nigeria as a leader in university sports across Africa.
