The National Sports Commission (NSC) has established a six-member caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) following the dissolution of its board by the International Judo Federation (IJF).
The decision, announced on October 8, 2026, marks another attempt to resolve the prolonged leadership crisis that has affected the federation's administration, electoral process and international standing. The committee will manage the transition until fresh elections are conducted and a new board is inaugurated.
Sheriff Hammed has been appointed chairman of the caretaker committee. Other members are Ekuta Catherine Ewa, Sule Musa, Bashir Musa Bassey and Oladipupo Idowu. Amayo Ngozi will serve as the committee's secretary.
The NSC said the appointment was made under Section 16 of the National Sports Commission Act, 2023. The committee is expected to provide temporary leadership while addressing the administrative issues that contributed to the federation's difficulties.
Its responsibilities include managing the federation's day-to-day operations and reviewing its constitution to ensure compliance with the requirements of the International Judo Federation. The committee must also convene an annual general meeting to consider and approve the amended constitution.
Another key responsibility is organising fresh elections to establish a new leadership structure. The committee will oversee the transition and ensure that the elected board takes over the federation's affairs.
The intervention follows a prolonged dispute over the legitimacy of the federation's leadership and the conduct of its electoral process. The situation eventually attracted the attention of the IJF, which dissolved the existing board.
The development presents an important opportunity to restore confidence in the federation's administration and strengthen its relationship with the international governing body. A transparent electoral process and a constitution that meets international requirements are expected to be central to the transition.
The NSC has instructed the caretaker committee to conduct its activities with transparency, diligence and impartiality. It also stressed that the development and overall interests of Nigerian judo must take priority over competing personal or administrative interests.
The commission further directed the committee to work closely with relevant stakeholders throughout the transition period. Cooperation among officials, athletes and other members of the judo community will be important in establishing a stable administrative structure.
The caretaker arrangement is expected to provide a framework for resolving the federation's leadership problems and preparing it for fresh elections. Its effectiveness will depend on the committee's ability to implement the required reforms and deliver a credible transition to an elected board.
