The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended Nigeria’s youth chess team for their outstanding display at the 2025 Africa Youth Chess Championships, held in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Nigerian contingent showcased remarkable skill and determination, earning recognition across the continent.

Featuring emerging talents such as Deborah Quickpen, Michelle Nwankwo, Jason Nwankwo, Zita Agusionu, Olakitan Elegbede, and Adeola Elegbede, the team excelled in various age categories. Their performance demonstrated tactical intelligence, mental resilience, and exemplary sportsmanship against some of Africa’s finest young chess players.

The NSC also highlighted the leadership of Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, President of the Chess Federation of Nigeria, along with the Federation’s Board members, for their dedication to the growth of chess nationwide. Their strategic guidance and commitment were seen as instrumental in the team’s success.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, remarked, “Beyond podium finishes and match results, the National Sports Commission is proud of the discipline, character, and national pride displayed by these young athletes throughout the championship.” He added that their accomplishments reflect deliberate preparation and underscore the importance of chess as a grassroots sport within Nigeria’s sports development framework.

The Commission reaffirmed its continued support for programs that nurture young talents and enhance Nigeria’s presence in continental and global sporting events, signalling a commitment to sustaining the growth of chess in the country.
