The National Sports Commission (NSC) has highly commended Team Nigeria following their spectacular performance at the 2026 African Open Para Powerlifting Championships in Oran, Algeria. The Nigerian contingent finished as the first runners-up at the competitive four-day continental event. They secured a grand total of 49 medals, which included 32 gold, 12 silver, and five bronze medals.
The Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised the entire delegation for their resilience, discipline, and patriotism throughout the tournament. He described the historic outing as a proud moment that perfectly showcases the country's growing dominance in global para sports. Olopade noted that the spectacular individual records set during the competition have inspired millions of citizens at home.
The standout performance of the final day came from Paralympic champion Onyinyechi Mark in the women's 67kg category. She delivered a masterclass by shattering both the world and African records to win a historic gold medal. Veteran lifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo also dominated her field to secure gold in the women's +86kg division. In the women's 50kg event, Ajiboye Rukayat won gold, while compatriot Anigbogu Chikordi Esther took silver.
The tournament featured over 150 elite athletes from 15 African nations alongside top competitors from Iran and Iraq. Powerlifting powerhouse Egypt finished at the top of the overall standings with 84 medals, comprising 47 gold, 28 silver, and nine bronze. Host nation Algeria finished third behind Nigeria with 78 total medals. The event also served as a crucial ranking pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.
Hon. Bukola Olopade assured the sports federations of sustained financial and structural support from the Federal Government. He emphasized that the commission is committed to enhancing human capacity and providing proper welfare for para athletes. The NSC boss stated that structured training programs will remain a top priority to maintain the country's elite ranking.
