The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Sport For All Commission, has announced that this year’s Olympic Day celebration will be held nationwide on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Olympic Day is a global event held annually to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympic Movement by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. It provides an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to engage in physical activities and embrace the Olympic spirit right in their communities.
The 2025 edition aims to highlight the numerous benefits of physical activity while promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Activities like jogging and walking will be encouraged for their role in calorie burning, muscle toning, stress reduction, and overall health.
The NOC has received encouraging responses from several states, with many already gearing up for various activities. Lagos, home to the NOC headquarters, will host multiple fitness and recreational events, including aerobics, jogging, and demonstration sports.
The celebration will culminate in the presentation of Olympic Day diplomas, signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The NOC is calling on corporate organisations and philanthropists to support the initiative through financial or material donations, offering exposure and goodwill in return.
Dr Abdul Ibrahim, Chairman of the NOC Sport For All Commission, also appealed to state governments, through their respective sports councils and commissions, to actively participate in this mass-oriented fitness programme.
