Noa Auch-Roy delivered an extraordinary performance at the South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship, nearly lapping the field in the grueling 36-hole finale at Mossel Bay Golf Club. Despite a weather delay due to torrential rain, the young Frenchman capitalized on cooler temperatures and a gentle breeze to dominate the course.
Auch-Roy shot a remarkable six-under-par 66 in the morning and followed it with a seven-under-par 65 in the afternoon, finishing with an outstanding 23-under-par total for the 72 holes.
The 18-year-old, who celebrates his 19th birthday in a few days, became the fourth French player in the last decade to win the title, securing a massive nine-stroke victory over runners-up Sean Paxton and Logan Leisher.
His victory follows in the footsteps of notable French golfers, including Ugo Coussaud, Edgar Catherine, and Martin Couvra. Reflecting on his win, Auch-Roy expressed his joy, citing his previous victory the week before and his admiration for the quality of tournaments in South Africa, which he has enjoyed over the past few years.
Auch-Roy's performance was near flawless, with only four dropped shots throughout the week. He played with confidence, maintaining a steady pace after an opening bogey-free round and limiting his mistakes to just one bogey in the final round.
His strategy of aggressive play, hitting drivers and wedges, proved successful, as he made an impressive five birdies on the back nine of his final round. The "hot putter" he mentioned played a key role in his success, helping him stay focused and calm under pressure.
As Auch-Roy now heads to Spain to continue his golfing journey, the South African Amateur Championship becomes wide open for other competitors. The championship begins this Sunday with a 36-hole qualifier at Humewood Golf Club, where the top 64 players will advance to the match-play stage, hoping to claim the prestigious title that Auch-Roy will not be defending.
