Posted : 26 January 2026

Murtala Saleh and Lady Gladys Tobin have emerged as the top winners in the men’s and ladies’ categories at the 2025 NLNG Golf Classic, held at Bonny Island, Rivers State.

The two-day invitational began on Friday and concluded on Saturday at Bonny Island Golf Club (BIGC). Sponsored by Nigeria LNG, the tournament marked the sixth edition of the annual classic, featuring over 100 golfers competing across multiple categories on the scenic BIGC course.

Saleh clinched the Men’s Division 1 title with a net score of 68, edging Peter Igbi on countback. Lady Tobin topped the Ladies Division 1 category with a net score of 75, while Kafayat Bamimore was first runner-up with 76.

In an interview, Saleh described winning the NLNG trophy for the first time as deeply fulfilling after several near misses, calling golf a source of joy, discipline, and stress relief. “Winning the NLNG Golf Classic for the first time is special. It’s a reward for patience, passion, and years of dedication to the game,” he said, praising the organisers and attributing his success to focus and experience.

Lady Tobin also expressed gratitude to the organisers, highlighting the tournament’s competitiveness, professional organisation, and the serene BIGC course, which added to the championship’s quality. “This win means a lot to me. The course was challenging, but consistency and calmness made the difference,” she said.

BIGC Captain Abubakar Hussaini claimed the men’s best gross prize with a score of 80, while the immediate past BIGC Lady Captain, Nnena Ahube, won the ladies’ best gross prize. In the Men’s Division 2 category, Sonny Fombo emerged winner with a net score of 65, and Oludare Oyegbami was first runner-up with 73. Bessie Obei won the Ladies Division 2 title with 74 net, with Marytina Osuchukwu as runner-up on 77.

Guest category winners included Ewache Iyoko (men) and Love Ndarake (ladies), while Veteran category champions were Osa Cookey (men) and Florence Edeki (ladies). Technical prizes saw Charles Uleh win the men’s longest drive, Ochade Ajabor the ladies’ longest drive, Joshua Anemeje the men’s straightest drive, and Bridget Ogwah the ladies’ straightest drive. Emmanuel Onyekwena and Dr. Atiemie Braide-Lolomari won the nearest-to-the-pin awards in their respective categories.

Dr. Sophie Horsfall, Chief Host and NLNG General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, said the event strengthened bonds among industry stakeholders and aligned with NLNG’s values of teamwork, excellence, and national development. “Golf brings people together. At NLNG, we see it as a platform for strengthening relationships and advancing our shared vision for Nigeria. The classic reflects NLNG’s commitment to partnership, unity, and excellence,” she said.

BIGC Captain Abubakar Hussaini thanked participants and partners for honouring the invitation despite demanding schedules. “I hope over the last two days you have had the opportunity to play and enjoy our beautiful surroundings. The club remains committed to promoting golf and hospitality in Bonny,” he concluded.
