The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Shaibu, has pledged to implement the recommendations of the 10-Year Road Map aimed at revitalizing Nigerian sports.
The pledge was made in Abuja during the presentation of the report by the 32-member Advisory Committee led by Musa Kida, which was inaugurated in July 2025. Shaibu commended the committee for its dedication and comprehensive work, assuring that the recommendations would not be shelved but executed.
"I want to thank the chairman of the committee for this report and assure him and the members that this will not be another document to gather dust on a shelf. We are ready to work, and we will review all the recommendations to see how we can implement them for the benefit of our country," he said.
Although the committee has been officially dissolved, Shaibu revealed that an implementation committee would be formed, including some members of the advisory panel. "We will release a list of individuals who will serve on the advisory council for implementing this document, and interestingly, the chairman will still lead the process. Those who produced the document understand its intention; if another group handles it, the implementation could falter," Shaibu explained.
Shaibu also disclosed plans to decentralize NIS operations by establishing zonal offices across the six geopolitical zones, a move designed to broaden the institute’s reach and impact. “Each geopolitical zone will have its own NIS office. Our mandate is to position NIS as a leading sports institute in Africa,” he stated.
In his remarks, Musa Kida, chairman of the Advisory Committee, described the report as a comprehensive roadmap aimed at tackling the key challenges facing NIS and fostering the growth of sports in Nigeria. “This document addresses gaps that have long existed within NIS, and we hope it contributes meaningfully to the ongoing effort to revamp and revitalize the institute,” Kida said.
