Nigerian Prospect Uar Bernard Stuns NFL Scouts With Record-Breaking Athletic Testing

Posted : 07 April 2026

A 21-year-old prospect from a small village in Benue, Nigeria, has become the talk of the American football world following a historic performance at the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) Pro Day. Uar Bernard, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 306 pounds, recorded athletic testing numbers that would shatter long-standing records for defensive tackles at the NFL Scouting Combine. Scouts were left stunned as the Nigerian native clocked a 4.63-second 40-yard dash, a time faster than the current record held by Calijah Kancey and former Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald.

Bernard’s physical profile has been described by trainers as "superhero-like," featuring a rare combination of size and lean muscle. Despite his massive frame, he recorded a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-10-inch broad jump, which was over a foot higher than any other defensive tackle at this year’s showcase. These explosive metrics have earned him a perfect 10.0 Relative Athletic Score (RAS), ranking him as one of the most athletic interior defensive line prospects in the history of the sport.

The journey for Bernard began in Nigeria, where he was discovered while playing basketball before transitioning to American football just a few months ago. To prepare for his professional opportunity, he used tree trunks to simulate offensive tackles and studied pass-rush techniques through online tutorials. Since moving to Florida to train at The Sack House, he has gained 10 pounds of muscle while maintaining an incredibly low body fat percentage of just 6 percent.

While Bernard has never played a single down of organized football, his raw potential has sparked significant interest across the league. He has already scheduled private visits with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, while the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles are also reportedly monitoring his progress. Comparisons have been drawn to Philadelphia’s Jordan Mailata, an Australian rugby player who successfully transitioned to become an All-Pro offensive tackle.

NFL analysts suggest that while Bernard is a developmental project, his "unicorn" athletic traits make him a high-reward gamble for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Teams looking for long-term solutions on the defensive line are viewing him as a late-round priority. For Bernard, the goal remains clear as he looks to represent Nigeria on the world's biggest stage, stating that he is ready to be a disruptive force for any team willing to teach him the game.
