The Nigerian Army emerged as the overall champions of the 2026 Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Independence Day Badminton Championship held on October 1 at Mambilla Barracks in Abuja.
The Army topped the medal table with eight medals, comprising three gold, one silver and four bronze. The Nigerian Air Force finished second with two medals, including one gold and one silver, while the Nigerian Navy placed third with two bronze medals.
Corporal Caroline Adaji led the Nigerian Army's performance in the women's singles event by winning the gold medal. Lance Corporal Nancy Naomi of the Nigerian Air Force secured silver, while Sergeant Suleman Ayuba of the Army and Master Warrant Officer Okoji of the Navy claimed bronze.
In the men's singles competition, Lance Corporal Kayode Oyeniran of the Nigerian Army secured gold, while Private Kelvin Daso earned silver. Private Daniel Nudamajo and Staff Sergeant Suleman Ayuba, both representing the Army, completed the podium with bronze medals.
The results highlighted the Army's strong performance across both singles categories and secured its position at the top of the overall standings.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, rewarded the medalists with cash prizes in recognition of their performances. Gold medalists received ₦400,000 each, while silver medalists earned ₦300,000. Bronze medalists were awarded ₦200,000 each.
Speaking at the conclusion of the competition, Oluyede expressed satisfaction with the successful organisation of the championship. He also commended the athletes, coaches and officials for their contributions to the event.
The Chief of Defence Staff emphasized the importance of competitions in developing sporting talent within the Armed Forces. He noted that such events provide opportunities for athletes to improve their technical abilities, gain competitive experience and pursue sporting excellence.
The championship formed part of activities marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Day celebrations. It also provided an opportunity for personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Navy to compete and demonstrate their badminton skills.
The tournament reinforced the role of sports in promoting discipline, physical fitness, teamwork and healthy competition among members of the Armed Forces.
