Team Nigeria began their campaign at the 2026 African Nations Beach Volleyball Championship in contrasting fashion on Tuesday, with the women securing a dominant victory while the men suffered a straight-set defeat in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Nigerian women made an impressive start at the Abu Heif Beach, dispatching Benin Republic 2-0 in their Group D opening fixture.
Nigeria took firm control of the encounter from the opening serve, cruising to a commanding 21-7 victory in the first set before maintaining their dominance to win the second 21-9 and complete a convincing straight-set triumph.
However, the men’s team could not replicate the feat, falling 0-2 to Algeria in their Group F opener.
The Algerians proved too strong for Nigeria, winning both sets by an identical 21-14 scoreline to secure maximum points from the encounter.
The 2026 championship has attracted 45 teams, comprising 24 men’s and 21 women’s teams from 28 African countries, underlining the growing importance of the continental beach volleyball event.
The stakes are particularly high this year, with the men’s and women’s champions guaranteed direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Nigeria will look to build on the women’s impressive opening victory while the men will aim to respond strongly in their next Group F encounter as the championship continues in Alexandria.
