After six days of entertaining and compelling action from the subregion's finest para athletes, Nigeria reaffirmed its dominance as the continent's leading para sports nation by finishing first with an overwhelming lead on the medals table.
Nigeria won a total of 59 gold, 39 silver, and 31 bronze medals, while Benin Republic finished a distant second with 4 gold, 4 silver, and 14 bronze medals.
Ghana emerged third on the medals table with a total of 39 medals—3 gold, 15 silver, and 21 bronze.
Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire completed the top five, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Cameroon won 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze, while Côte d’Ivoire secured 1 gold and no silver or bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Amputee Football Team won the final gold medal of the competition, defeating Liberia 1–0 in the final on Wednesday as part of the closing ceremony activities.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, commended all participating athletes, describing their involvement as a historic feat that will be remembered for years to come.
"This is history in the making, and the over 400 para athletes from across the West African subregion are the true heroes of African sports," he said.
"I must also commend the Government of Ogun State for their unwavering support for sports development. Ogun State has continually partnered with our Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy (RHINSE)."
Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, also praised the performance of all participating countries, especially Team Nigeria athletes.
"At the NSC, we are proud to be part of these games, which have raised awareness of para sports and given renewed hope to people living with disabilities," he stated.
"I can assure everyone that the Commission is even more committed to hosting more international para competitions to further advance the growth of para sports and build on the success of these games."
Meanwhile, the President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, Sunday Odebode, expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for providing people living with disabilities the support they truly deserve through the NSC.
"This historic competition would not have been possible without the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade. They are the best thing that has ever happened to para sports in Nigeria," he concluded.
He also thanked members of the Local Organising Committee, led by Victor Achakpo, for their total commitment to the successful hosting of the games.
