Nigeria Weightlifters Head to Aberdeen for Final Training Ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Posted : 24 June 2026

The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) is pleased with the progress of its athletes at the ongoing high-performance camp in Abuja. The camp started on June 9 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and features 20 athletes plus four coaches.

Technical Director Sefiya Onubaye described the sessions as very successful. Athletes have shown strong commitment, discipline and determination as they fight for selection spots. Training has covered technical skills, strength building, conditioning, recovery and competition practice.

The current athletes in camp include Ruth Asuquo, Joseph Edidiong Umuafia, Sammy Cosmos, Rafiatu Lawal, Taiwo Liadi, Mary Osijo, Fathia Owoyele, Ruth Ayodele, Favour Agboro, Adedapo Opadeji, Emmanuela Edim, Abayomi Adeyemi, Didih Onome, Goodnews Obodo, Islamiyat Yusuf, Esther Adebayo, Goodnews Jacob, Precious Asadu and Marvelous Ibe. The coaches are Sefiya Onubaye, Ruth Odunrinde, Luke Ibe and Young Peter Njoku.

The Abuja programme will end on July 1. A final team of nine athletes and two coaches will then fly to Aberdeen on July 2. The overseas training tour begins on July 3 and will serve as the last preparation stage before moving to Glasgow.

Onubaye believes the Aberdeen camp will help the selected lifters fine-tune their lifts. It will also allow them to adapt to international conditions and meet elite standards.

NWF President Dr. Ibrahim Aladi Abdul praised the hard work shown by everyone involved. He said the federation designed the full programme to make sure Nigeria’s team is ready to compete for medals.

"The camp is progressing very well and the athletes are in high spirits," Abdul stated. He added that the move from Abuja to Aberdeen will boost readiness even more.

Abdul thanked the National Sports Commission led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade. Their support made both the local camp and the overseas tour possible.

Nigeria’s weightlifters aim to improve on their 2022 Birmingham performance. Team Nigeria won six medals there with two gold, one silver and three bronze. Abdul expressed confidence that the current group has the quality to deliver strong results in Glasgow.
