Nigeria Unveils 12-Man Squad for 2025 African Fencing Championships in Lagos

Posted : 23 June 2025

The Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF) has released the list of 12 athletes who will represent the country at the 23rd African Fencing Championships, scheduled for June 25 to 29, 2025, at Charterhouse Lagos.

The selection features both internationally based and local athletes, including promising stars such as Inkosi Brou, Peluola Akinbamiro, and Wisdom Okanlawon, alongside other talents like Oritsematosan Egbesemirone, Somto Eribenne, and the Idongesit siblings, among others.

This year’s championship is especially significant as it will be the first time Nigeria hosts the continental event, bringing together over 200 athletes from 26 countries. The Charterhouse Lagos venue—renowned for its international-grade facilities, will serve as a major platform for Nigeria to make a breakthrough on the African fencing scene.

Speaking ahead of the competition, head coach Ibrahim Alogba expressed confidence in the team's readiness, citing the combination of youthful energy and recent international exposure as key advantages.

“We have a young but determined team. Hosting the championship at home gives us extra motivation to perform,” he said.

NFF President Adeyinka Samuel also emphasized that years of investment in athlete development and coaching are now coming to fruition.

“This championship represents a new chapter for Nigerian fencing,” he noted. “We are optimistic about our chances of reaching the podium.”

The championship will feature 12 medal events across foil, épée, and sabre disciplines, both in individual and team formats. Expectations are high as the home team aims to secure its first-ever medal in the competition’s history.

With growing interest in fencing and increased support from local stakeholders, Nigeria’s participation as both host and contender may prove to be a defining moment for the sport in the country.
