The Nigeria Under-23 and Under-18 Handball National Teams are en route to Varna, Bulgaria, and Pristina, Kosovo, ahead of the 5th IHF Emerging Nations Championship and the IHF Trophy's Intercontinental Phase.
The two teams left Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday for the IHF Emerging Nations Championship, which will take place from March 11-15, 2025, in Varna, Bulgaria, and the IHF Trophy's Intercontinental Phase, held in Pristina, Kosovo.
The two teams underwent an extensive one-week training camp; the U-23 team, under the tutelage of Coach Solomon Yola, trained at Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, while the U-18 team trained at the Rowe Park Sports Center in Yaba, Lagos, under the guidance of their coach, Emeka Nnamani.
The U-23 men's team will begin their Emerging Nations Championship campaign against the United States of America at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, followed by a match against Moldova at 3:45 PM on Wednesday. Their final group B match is against Moldova on Thursday at 1:30 PM. All matches will be played at the Palace of Sports and Culture in Varna, Bulgaria, which is a replica of Nigeria's National Theatre in Lagos.
The team is familiar with two of their opponents at this level, having lost to the Americans in one of the group games at the inaugural edition of the Emerging Nations Championship held in 2019 in Georgia, and having defeated Azerbaijan in another group match during the 2023 edition, also hosted in Bulgaria.
The U-18 team is in Group B, where they will play against Kosovo and New Caledonia. They will begin their campaign on Wednesday against New Caledonia at 4:00 PM and will also play Kosovo on Thursday at the same time. All matches will be played at the Palace of Youth and Sports in Pristina, Kosovo.
