Nigeria and Uganda have emerged as the early frontrunners in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier C in Abuja, with both teams winning their opening two matches as they compete for places in the next stage of qualification.
Nigeria leads the six-team standings with four points and a net run rate of 5.6129, while Uganda sits in second place with the same number of points but a lower net run rate of 3.8635.
The latest standings, released on Thursday, October 22, place Lesotho and Mozambique third and fourth, respectively, with two points each after recording one victory and one defeat.
Zambia and The Gambia are yet to register a win in the competition, which began on October 20 at the twin cricket ovals in Abuja.
The round-robin tournament features six countries competing for two qualification spots in the next stage of the pathway to the 2027 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Nigeria’s strong performances have given the hosts an encouraging start as the country continues to strengthen its presence in international cricket.
The progress comes amid other recent achievements, including the qualification of Nigeria’s U-19 women’s team for the ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup for a second consecutive time and the promotion of the U-19 men’s team to Division One.
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, welcomed the participating teams and officials to Abuja, describing the tournament as an opportunity to showcase Africa’s emerging cricket talent and strengthen sporting partnerships across the continent.
Olopade also acknowledged the contributions of the Federal Government, corporate organisations, the Cricket Federation and individuals in making the competition possible.
With Nigeria benefiting from home support and Uganda matching its points tally, the battle for the two available qualification spots is expected to intensify as the remaining fixtures unfold.
