Nigeria U19 Women Defeat Uganda by Four Wickets in World Cup Qualifier Opener

Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens made a winning start to the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 after defeating Uganda by four wickets in Tanzania on Sunday. Nigeria chased down Uganda’s modest total of 59 for seven in 13.1 overs at the TCA Arena.

Uganda won the toss and chose to bat first, but Nigeria’s bowlers produced a disciplined display. The Ugandan batting line-up struggled to find scoring opportunities as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Chisom Okpe was Nigeria’s leading bowler, taking two wickets for just four runs from her four overs. Peace Usen also claimed two wickets for 12 runs as Nigeria kept Uganda to a low total.

Shadiah Gilingish Nabulime was Uganda’s top scorer with 22 runs from 34 balls. She struck three boundaries and provided the main resistance during an innings that never gained sustained momentum. Jimia Abdallah Mohamed added 13 from 25 deliveries.

Nigeria’s chase was not completely straightforward despite the small target. Uganda’s Sarah Tino produced an outstanding individual performance with the ball, taking five wickets for 13 runs from four overs, including two maiden overs.

Her spell put Nigeria under pressure and reduced the YellowGreens to six wickets down. Nigeria, however, held their nerve and completed the chase without allowing Uganda to force a major upset.

Omosigho Eguakun played a key role in the successful chase, scoring 24 runs from 29 balls. Captain Christabel Chukwuonye also made an important contribution, hitting 13 from 10 deliveries, including three boundaries.

Nigeria eventually finished on 60 for six after 13.1 overs to secure four points and an important opening victory. The result gives the Junior Female YellowGreens an early advantage in Group A, which also contains Malawi and hosts Tanzania.

The Africa Qualifier features eight teams competing for one place at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal. South Africa have already secured one of Africa’s places at the global tournament, while the winner of this qualifier will claim the continent’s remaining spot.

Nigeria’s next group match is against Malawi on Monday, August 31. The team will then face hosts Tanzania on September 2 before the semi-finals on September 3 for the top two teams in each group.
