Nigeria U-20 Handball Team Seal Fourth World Championship Ticket

Nigeria’s U-20 Men’s Handball team secured their fourth appearance at the IHF Men’s Under-21 World Championship after defeating Guinea 28-23 in the quarter-finals of the 33rd Africa Men’s Junior Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory on Wednesday also booked the Nigerian youngsters a place in the championship’s semi-finals, where they will face Tunisia for a place in the final.

Coach David Emmanuel’s side established control early in the quarter-final, taking a 14-10 lead into the half-time break.

Guinea, however, returned strongly after the interval and mounted a late challenge, but Nigeria held their nerve to preserve a five-goal advantage and secure progression.

Tunisia booked their semi-final ticket with a commanding 36-20 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the other quarter-final.

Nigeria’s qualification for the 2027 IHF Men’s Under-21 World Championship means the country will make a fourth appearance at the global tournament.

The Nigerian team previously featured at the 1981 World Championship in Portugal, where it finished 14th, before placing 16th at the 1985 edition in Italy.

The country’s most recent appearance came at the 2019 championship in Spain, where Nigeria finished 19th.

Emmanuel said the team was delighted to achieve its primary objective but would not lose sight of its bigger ambition of winning the continental championship.

“We are happy with the victory and, most importantly, the qualification for the World Championship. The boys showed character and discipline against Guinea,” Emmanuel said.

He added that the team would now focus on recovery and preparations for the semi-final against Tunisia.

“Now we have to recover, study our next opponent, which is Tunisia, and prepare properly for the semi-final.

“We know it will be a difficult game, but we are ready for the challenge as we aim to win the Africa Nations Championship,” he said.

The Nigerians will now turn their attention to Tunisia as they continue their pursuit of a place in the final and a chance to claim the continental title.
