Nigeria U-19 Women’s Cricket Team Begins Intensive Camp for World Cup Qualifiers

Posted : 28 April 2026

The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) has officially launched its first phase of training for the U-19 women’s national team. This camp is a direct preparation for the upcoming 2027 ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup qualifiers. The Junior Female Yellow Greens are currently training at the NCF High-Performance Centre located in Benin City.

The NCF invited a total of 21 players to participate in this initial development stage. Most of these athletes were discovered during the National U-17 Championships held in 2025 and 2026. This pathway has become the primary source for identifying and promoting young talent into the national setup.

A specialized technical crew is overseeing the training sessions in Edo State. Kenyan coach Sarah Bhakita is working alongside head coach Theophilus Ebidome to refine the squad. They are supported by former team captain Blessing Etim: who brings vital experience from the previous World Cup campaign in Malaysia.

The qualifying tournament is scheduled to take place in Tanzania from September 25 to October 4, 2026. Nigeria faces a competitive field including Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and the host nation. Kenya and Malawi recently joined the group after successfully navigating the Division 2 qualifiers in Uganda.

Only one team from this Division 1 tournament will earn a spot at the global event. The successful side will join South Africa as the representatives for the African continent. The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal.

Nigeria enters this cycle with a strong reputation following their impressive debut in the 2023 tournament. During that appearance in Malaysia: the team reached the Super Six stage and finished sixth overall. They secured their spot in that tournament by defeating Zimbabwe in a dramatic qualification final in late 2024.

Following the conclusion of the Benin City camp: the NCF plans to move the team to Abuja. This second phase will focus on final team selection and tactical drills. Officials believe this multi-phase approach is necessary to maintain the high standards set by the previous youth squad.
