Nigeria U-19 Girls cruise into Africa Qualifier semi-finals with Malawi rout

Posted : 02 September 2026

Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens have taken a major step towards the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup after powering into the semi-finals of the Africa Qualifier Division 1 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Nigerian side secured their place in the last four with a commanding 94-run victory over Malawi, following their hard-fought four-wicket triumph against Uganda in their opening Group A encounter.

Against Malawi, Nigeria established a strong platform with the bat, posting 152 runs for seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs before their bowlers dismantled the Malawian batting line-up for 58 runs in 18.3 overs.

Vice-captain Shola Adekunle top-scored for Nigeria with 32 runs from 27 deliveries, while Omosigho Eguakun and Beauty Oguai chipped in with 26 runs apiece. Captain Christabel Chukwuonye also provided an attacking contribution, striking 20 runs from just 12 balls.

The impressive batting display was followed by an equally ruthless bowling performance as Nigeria restricted Malawi to a modest total and completed their second successive victory of the competition.

Nigeria had earlier survived a tense opening encounter against Uganda, chasing down a target of 60 to claim a four-wicket win.

Eguakun was again influential, scoring a composed 24 off 29 balls to guide Nigeria through the chase despite Uganda’s Tino Sarah causing problems with five wickets.

Two wins from two matches have now guaranteed Nigeria a place in the semi-finals, giving the young side renewed confidence as they pursue the ultimate prize — the sole qualification ticket to the 2027 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens will round off their Group A campaign against hosts Tanzania, with the encounter offering another opportunity to fine-tune their preparations before the knockout stage.

Nigeria’s emphatic start in Tanzania has also provided another encouraging indication of the growing strength of women’s cricket in the country, with the young players now just two victories away from securing a place at the global showpiece.
