Nigeria U-18 Handball Team Close in on World Championship Ticket

Nigeria’s U-18 Men’s Handball team kept their 2027 IHF Men’s Under-19 Handball World Championship hopes alive with a 31-26 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan on Monday.

The Nigerian youngsters produced a composed performance in the 5th–8th placement match of the 22nd Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship to move within one victory of securing a place at next year’s global championship.

Coach Abdulhakim Yakubu’s side established a two-goal advantage at halftime, leading 13-11 before extending their lead in the second half to complete a five-goal victory.

Simon Abaaka was named the Most Valuable Player of the encounter after playing a key role in Nigeria’s successful outing.

The victory means Nigeria will now contest another crucial placement match against the winner of the meeting between Cameroon and Rwanda.

The encounter carries significant importance, as victory would earn Nigeria fifth place at the continental championship and, more importantly, one of Africa’s five available qualification tickets for the 2027 IHF Men’s Under-19 Handball World Championship.

With their World Championship qualification hopes now firmly within reach, the Nigerian youngsters need one more victory to complete their mission.

The team will therefore have little room for complacency as they prepare for the decisive encounter, with a place on the global stage at stake.
