Nigeria U-18 Boys Fall Short of World Championship Qualification After Cameroon Shootout Loss

Nigeria’s U-18 Men’s Handball team saw their hopes of reaching the 2027 IHF Under-19 Handball World Championship dashed after losing 32-30 to Cameroon in a dramatic fifth-place playoff at the Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

With both teams refusing to give ground, the decisive encounter finished 27-27 after regulation time, following an equally tight 12-12 scoreline at halftime.

The deadlock meant the crucial fifth-place position and the accompanying World Championship qualification hopes had to be settled through a seven-metre penalty shootout.

Cameroon proved more composed from the spot, converting five penalties against Nigeria’s three to complete a 32-30 victory and finish fifth at the championship.

For Nigeria, the result brought a disappointing end to their campaign and extinguished their hopes of claiming one of Africa’s five available qualification places for the 2027 IHF Under-19 Handball World Championship.

The Coach Abdulhakim Yakubu-tutored side had kept their qualification ambitions alive by defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 31-26 in the 5th–8th placement match.

However, they were unable to produce the final push against Cameroon, with the narrow defeat leaving the Nigerian youngsters outside the qualification places.
