Posted : 01 August 2025

Babajide Akeredolu, President of the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), has expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s inclusion in the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

Akeredolu revealed that the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) has officially invited Nigeria to represent Africa at the global event. He described the opportunity as a historic milestone for both Nigeria and the continent in the development of flag football.

He encouraged Nigerians to celebrate the announcement and support the national teams as they prepare to compete in Düsseldorf, Germany, from August 13 to 16, 2026. According to Akeredolu, the teams will proudly display Nigeria’s talent, determination, and resilience on the world stage.

“Today, IFAF, in partnership with the NFL and the City of Düsseldorf, officially named Düsseldorf as the host city for the 2026 Flag Football World Championships,” he said.

“We’re proud to confirm that Nigeria will field both men’s and women’s teams to compete against the best in the world.”

Akeredolu highlighted the significance of the tournament as a defining moment for flag football in Nigeria and for the nation’s global sporting reputation. “As the spotlight shines on Düsseldorf next year, our teams will compete with passion, representing Nigeria with pride and resilience,” he added.

He extended appreciation to Hon. Olawande Ayodele, Minister for Youth Development and Chairman of the Flag Football Development Board; Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; and Chief Bukola Olopade, Director-General, for their unwavering support. Akeredolu recognized their roles as essential in advancing NAFA’s vision and expanding the sport’s national reach.

Additionally, he acknowledged strategic partners, including NFL Africa, NFL Flag, and Browns Nigeria, for their instrumental support in implementing and promoting flag football programs across the country.
