The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially confirmed that Nigeria will participate in the inaugural African School Games, scheduled to take place in Algeria from July 26 to August 5, 2025. This groundbreaking event, organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of youth sports across the continent.
Describing the championship as a historic opportunity, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade emphasized its significance in promoting Nigeria’s school-age athletic talent on a continental stage. “This is a milestone opportunity for Nigeria to showcase and nurture its school-age sporting talents,” he stated.
In preparation for the event, the NSC is collaborating closely with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), school authorities, and parents to ensure a well-organized and successful outing for Team Nigeria.
Nigeria will compete in 10 sporting disciplines, including athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, canoeing, football, swimming, table tennis, cycling, and taekwondo.
The official arrival of delegations, including Chefs de Mission, and the opening of the Games Village are set for July 23, 2025.
Speaking further on Nigeria’s broader sports development agenda, Olopade referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate for the NSC to drive growth in the sports economy. “This is a fresh era for the NSC, as youth are beginning to benefit from the sports economy we are building,” he said.
Since the current NSC leadership took office, 21 sports federations have already participated in international events, a testament to the commission’s commitment to giving equal attention to all sports.
Participation in the African School Games requires a valid school certificate for all student-athletes, in line with event regulations. Additionally, the NSC and NOC will coordinate with parents and guardians to secure paternal authorizations for all eligible minors.
The African School Games aim to serve as a unique platform for talent discovery, grassroots sports development, and youth engagement. The competition is guided by the Olympic values of excellence, solidarity, and fraternity, and is designed exclusively for African schoolchildren.
The National Sports Commission has reaffirmed its dedication to empowering Nigerian youth through sports and leveraging international platforms to inspire the next generation of champions.
