Nigeria Stumble Against Vietnam and Austria at Chess Olympiad

Nigeria suffered a double setback in Round 6 of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, as both the men’s and women’s teams recorded defeats on Monday, September 21.

The men’s team endured a 4-0 loss to Vietnam, with all four Nigerian players beaten across the boards. FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha, FM Abdulrahman Akintoye Abdulraheem, IM Odion Aikhoje and Odey Goodness Ekunkе were unable to secure a draw against their Vietnamese opponents.

The defeat came one day after Nigeria produced one of its strongest results of the tournament. The men defeated Malawi 3½-½ in Round 5, with Abdulraheem, Aikhoje and Ekunke winning their games while Kigigha drew.

The Vietnam loss leaves Nigeria with six match points after six rounds. The team has recorded three wins and three defeats so far, having also defeated Saudi Arabia in Round 3 before losing to Cuba in Round 4.

The women’s team also struggled against Austria. Nigeria lost 3-1, with the Round 6 pairing record confirming the result as Austria scored three points against Nigeria’s one.

Nigeria’s women entered the round with six match points and had produced a mixed opening to the tournament. WFM Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo has been among the team’s notable individual performers; the 13-year-old holds a 1,997 FIDE rating and was part of Nigeria’s five-player squad in Samarkand.

Both Nigerian teams now have a scheduled rest day before the competition resumes. The Olympiad features 11 rounds, with the next round set for Wednesday, September 23.

The 46th Chess Olympiad is being staged in Samarkand from September 16 to 27. The tournament brings together national teams from across the world in a Swiss-system competition, giving Nigeria another major test against international opposition.
