The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), has officially signed the Games Hosting Agreement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for the 2027 African School Games.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Abuja, formally confirming the Nigerian capital as the host city for the second edition of the continental school sports event.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko described the hosting rights as a major achievement for Nigeria. He said the Games reflect the Federal Government's commitment to grassroots sports development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Dikko stressed that school sports remain the foundation for producing future champions. He added that the Commission is working closely with the Federal Ministry of Education to expand participation and strengthen talent development across the country.
He also highlighted the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) initiative, which was introduced as the 38th state at the National Sports Festival. According to him, the programme has become an important platform for identifying and nurturing young sporting talents.
Dikko said preparations for Abuja 2027 would also support ongoing efforts to improve sports facilities nationwide. He expressed confidence that Nigeria would host a world-class competition capable of setting new standards for future editions of the African School Games.
"We are excited to welcome Africa to Abuja in 2027. With ANOCA's collaboration, Nigeria will deliver a world-class event that will set a new benchmark, just as we have successfully hosted major international competitions in the past," Dikko said.
NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade said the hosting rights demonstrate the Commission's commitment to youth and grassroots sports. He praised the Local Organising Committee, led by Lekan Abari, and noted that ANOCA had expressed confidence in the team responsible for delivering the Games.
ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf described the agreement as an important moment for African sports. He said the signing officially confirmed Abuja as the host city and wished Nigeria success in staging an outstanding tournament for young athletes across the continent.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of an Honorary Award of Excellence to Mallam Shehu Dikko in recognition of his contributions to sports development in Nigeria and Africa. Bukola Olopade also received a Plaque of Appreciation from ANOCA for his leadership in sports administration.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including ANOCA First Vice President João Da Costa, Secretary General Ahmed Hashim, Nigeria Olympic Committee President Engr. Habu Gumel, and National Institute for Sports Director General Philip Shaibu. The official logo and mascot for the Abuja 2027 African School Games were also unveiled during the ceremony.
