Nigeria Set for 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics – Orbih

Nigeria is set to welcome players from across the world as the 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics gets underway in Lagos, with 166 players from 27 countries expected to compete for honours.

President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, said the federation had concluded preparations for the international tournament, scheduled for August 26 to 29, 2026, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium, Lagos.

Orbih said the strong international turnout was a positive indication of the growing status of the competition, adding that the federation was determined to provide a befitting platform for the participating players.

“We are fully prepared to host the 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics. The response from participating countries has been very encouraging, and we are expecting 166 players from 27 countries to compete in this year’s tournament,” he said.

The BFN president noted that the US$20,000 prize purse would further enhance the competitiveness of the championship and motivate athletes to deliver their best performances.

“The US$20,000 prize money demonstrates the level of importance attached to this competition. We want the players to have every motivation to give their best and put on a great performance,” Orbih said.

He also commended the management of the NIS, led by its Director General, Rt. Hon. Phillip Shuaibu, for granting the federation access to the facility for the championship.

“We sincerely appreciate the Director General of the National Institute for Sports, Rt. Hon. Phillip Shuaibu, and his management team for making the venue available to the Badminton Federation of Nigeria. Their support has been crucial to our preparations, and we are grateful for their cooperation,” he said.

Orbih added that hosting the competition was part of the federation’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s position on the international badminton circuit and establish the country as a reliable destination for major badminton events.

He expressed confidence that the 9th edition would be successfully delivered and provide an exciting platform for both Nigerian and international players to showcase their skills.
