Team Nigeria has officially opened its medal account at the ongoing African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, securing two silver medals in badminton and women’s 3x3 basketball.
In a thrilling mixed doubles badminton final, Team Nigeria delivered a valiant performance but narrowly lost to host nation Algeria in a tightly contested match. The encounter drew loud cheers from the crowd as the Nigerian players fought gallantly throughout.
In another commendable display, Nigeria’s girls’ 3x3 basketball team clinched silver following a nail-biting final against Rwanda at the Chappi Beach basketball court. The match ended 12–11 in favor of Rwanda, despite a determined late push by the Nigerian side.
Earlier in the day, the girls defeated Benin Republic in the semifinals to secure their place in the final. The medals were presented by the President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel, who praised the athletes for their resilience and team spirit.
These podium finishes reflect Team Nigeria’s strong intent to compete across all events. Attention now turns to the athletics events, which kick off on Friday, August 1st.
Leading the charge in track and field is the sensational Miracle Ezechukwu, reigning African U18 champion in the 100m and 200m. Ezechukwu, along with a talented team of young athletes, is expected to be a major medal contender as Nigeria pushes forward in its quest for sporting excellence.
The National Sports Commission has lauded the athletes' performances and reaffirmed its commitment to developing grassroots talent through international exposure and competitive opportunities.
