Nigeria secures key role on WBSC Africa Baseball Commission

Nigeria has strengthened its presence in continental baseball administration following the appointment of Kehinde Laniyan to the Baseball Commission of the World Baseball Softball Confederation Africa (WBSC Africa).

The appointment was announced on Saturday in an official statement issued by the Executive Director of WBSC Africa from the organisation's Secretariat in Cape Verde.

According to the statement, the five-member Commission comprises representatives from South Africa, Nigeria, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, and is tasked with supporting the growth and development of baseball across the African continent.

WBSC Africa said Laniyan was selected in recognition of his extensive experience in baseball administration and his long-standing contributions to the sport in Nigeria and across Africa.

Laniyan previously served as Secretary General of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA) and currently serves as District Administrator for Little League International in Nigeria.

He also coordinates the West Africa Little League Tournament, where he has been instrumental in promoting youth baseball and expanding participation across the sub-region.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Little League International presented him with the 2022 Meritorious Service Award for Europe and Africa.

Beyond sports administration, Laniyan is a Deputy Registrar at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), where he has built a reputation for professionalism and dedicated public service.

WBSC Africa noted that his appointment reflects his commitment to the advancement of baseball and softball and is expected to enhance Nigeria's role in shaping policies and programmes aimed at developing the sport across the continent.

The continental body added that the appointment has been widely welcomed by stakeholders within the baseball and softball community, who see it as a positive step for the future of the game in Africa.

Laniyan's appointment marks another important milestone for Nigerian baseball, reinforcing the country's growing influence within the sport's continental administration. It also reflects confidence in Nigeria's ability to contribute to the continued development and expansion of baseball across Africa.
