Nigeria's Yellow Green gets good recommendations, inspire defeat

Posted : 22 March 2024

Sylvester Okpe, captain of the Nigeria men’s cricket team, has hailed the team’s performance despite failing to secure a semifinal spot at the men’s cricket event of the ongoing African Games in Ghana.

Okpe, whose team finished with one win in three matches, exited the tournament following a 10-wicket loss to Zimbabwe in Group B on Wednesday.

Speaking on the team’s outing in Accra, the captain said they have lots of positives to take home.

“Coming to the African Games has been a great experience for us, individually and collectively.

“We know where we did well and where we need to improve.

“We will go back to our drawing board and ensure we prepare better next time,” Okpe said.

Speaking on the team’s loss to Zimbabwe, Okpe said: “It was a great game.

“I felt the Zimbabweans played very well, and they are one of the highest-ranked teams in this tournament, so I give them credit.

“So many activities happened around that distracted us a little bit, especially with the injury Isaac Danladi picked up and was stretched out of the game.

“Nevertheless, the guys tried to push as long as they could, but at the end, Zimbabwe took the game away from us,” he said.

Earlier, Danladi got injured with the ball off the bowling of Zimbabwe’s Trevor Gwandu and had to retire for medical attention.

Nigeria in Group B lost by 47 runs to Tanzania in their game before beating Namibia by three wickets and losing to Zimbabwe by 10 wickets.
