Nigeria’s Weightlifters Can Dominate the World – Coach Salama

Posted : 24 June 2025

Globally sought-after weightlifting coach, Maged Salama, has declared that Nigeria has the potential to challenge powerhouse China and dominate the global stage in weightlifting.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday while addressing Nigerian weightlifters and coaches, Salama expressed confidence in the quality of athletes available in the country, stating that with proper development, Nigeria could become a world leader in the sport.

The former Olympic gold medalist urged athletes and officials to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) to maximize their potential and advance their careers.

“From the list I have here and the records therein, Nigeria has the potential to challenge China in weightlifting. The talent is there, and if well harnessed, the country can dominate the world.

“Nigeria has a great history in weightlifting, and I believe there are just a few missing links that need to be connected to achieve even greater history,” Salama said.

He also highlighted the promising age bracket of Nigeria’s lifters, noting that many are between 15 and 23 years old—an age range that gives the country a strong foundation for long-term success.

Salama, an Austrian national who arrived in Nigeria on Friday for a one-week training programme organized by the NWF, emphasized that success in weightlifting requires strict self-discipline, consistent training, and proper nutrition.

“To achieve stardom, you need to discipline yourself, train consistently, and follow proper nutrition. Obey your coaches and stick to your training schedules.

“Be cautious about the food and supplements you take. Discipline is the key factor in achieving your goals. I’m here to help make you better, but a lot depends on your effort.

“I have produced world champions in Egypt, Sweden, and Australia, and I believe that after this training, Nigeria will continue to record improved performances on the global stage,” he added.

Earlier in the programme, the President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Ibrahim Abdul Aladi, encouraged the athletes and coaches to consider the training a golden opportunity for growth and assured them of the federation’s continued commitment to their welfare and development.

A total of 22 athletes and 8 coaches are participating in the one-week training programme, which is scheduled to end on Sunday.
