Nigeria's U-19 Cricket coach sets ambitious target for World Cup

Posted : 17 January 2025

Sarah Bhakita, Head Coach of Nigeria's U19 Women's Cricket team, says the team is aiming to finish as one of the top two teams at the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Women’s World Cup.

In an interview, Bhakita discussed the team's World Cup warm-up matches. They lost to Pakistan on Monday but defeated Scotland in the second game on Wednesday.

The World Cup is scheduled to be held in Malaysia from Jan. 18 to Feb. 2.

Bhakita stated that the team had prepared well to ensure a successful outing at the tournament.

“The matches have been a great morale booster for the team, especially with the win over Scotland.”

“Following this momentum, we would like to enter the World Cup with confidence and ensure that we achieve the most wins in our games and reach the final.”

“I believe these girls are capable if they apply themselves well. The only thing we need to do right now is encourage them to believe in themselves,” Bhakita noted.

Nigeria earned the lone slot available for Africa in the qualifiers in September 2024.

The team has since trained at High Performance Centers in Edo and Lagos before traveling to India for a training tour.

The team will begin their World Cup campaign in the 16-nation tournament against Samoa on Saturday at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
