Rita Ferdinand won gold in the women’s 79kg category at the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo.
Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting continued on Sunday as Rita Ferdinand clinched gold in the women’s up to 79kg category at the ongoing 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Ferdinand delivered a commanding performance, lifting an impressive 153kg to secure the world title and extend Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in the sport.
Her outstanding victory adds to the nation’s growing medal tally at the historic championship. Earlier in the day, Esther Nworgu claimed silver in the 50kg category, while Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye earned bronze in the same event — narrowly missing gold to Venezuela’s Clara Fuentes, who edged out Nworgu for the top spot.
The 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships, taking place from October 9–18, 2025, marks the first-ever edition hosted on African soil, underscoring the continent’s expanding influence in adaptive sports and Nigeria’s leading role in global para powerlifting.
