Nigeria’s Green Hawks Begin Africa Netball Journey With Kenya Defeat

Nigeria’s Green Hawks began their historic campaign at the Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi with a 61-40 defeat to hosts Kenya on Saturday.

The encounter at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was Nigeria’s first appearance at the continental tournament and the opening fixture of their Pool 2 campaign in the Netball World Cup Sydney 2027 Africa Qualifier.

World Netball lists Nigeria among the 10 countries competing in the Sept. 19-26 tournament.

For a national side only recently assembled for international competition, the fixture marked a significant step in the development of netball in Nigeria.

Information from the Nigerian delegation also indicated that the Green Hawks' participation made Nigeria the first West African country to feature at the Africa Netball Cup.

Despite the defeat, the team received encouragement from officials and representatives within the continental netball community, with the players urged to build on the experience as the competition progresses.

The President of Africa Netball also congratulated the Nigerian delegation after the match and joined members of the team for photographs.

Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, equally sent a message of encouragement to Nigeria Netball Federation President, Dr Esther Oluwatoyin Aluko, following the encounter.

“We are all proud of you and the team,” Olopade told Aluko.

Aluko had earlier commended the National Sports Commission for creating an enabling environment for the revival and development of netball in Nigeria.

The Green Hawks will have an early opportunity to respond to their opening-day setback when they face Uganda on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. East Africa Time (4 p.m. Nigerian time).

Nigeria will then meet Malawi on Monday before concluding their Pool 2 fixtures against Zambia on Tuesday.

While the opening result did not go their way, the Green Hawks' maiden appearance provides valuable international exposure as Nigeria begins its journey in competitive African netball.
