Nigeria’s quest for a beach volleyball medal at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar ended on Tuesday after Pamela Bawa and Joy Lawrence lost to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
The Nigerian pair fell 14-21, 16-21 to Dutch opponents Jara Both and Matilda de Groot in straight sets on Day Four of the competition, missing out on a place in the semi-finals.
Despite their determined effort, Bawa and Lawrence struggled to contain the Dutch duo, who maintained their advantage in both sets to secure progression into the last four.
The defeat brought an end to what had been an encouraging campaign for the Nigerian youngsters, whose quarter-final qualification placed them among the eight best teams in the competition.
Nigeria were also among only two African countries to reach the quarter-final stage, highlighting the significance of their achievement at the continental level.
Although the defeat denied them an opportunity to compete for a medal, their performance provided valuable international experience against some of the world's promising young beach volleyball players.
The exposure is expected to strengthen their development as they continue their careers, while offering encouragement for the growth of beach volleyball in Nigeria.
For Bawa and Lawrence, the Dakar experience represents an important step in their international journey, despite the disappointment of their quarter-final exit.
