Nigeria’s top table tennis stars, led by Quadri Aruna, have suffered significant drops in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) world rankings.
Aruna, widely regarded as Nigeria’s greatest table tennis export and one of Africa’s finest players, dropped 20 places in the new rankings to World No. 76. The setback also sees the former African champion fall to fourth position among African players.
Another Nigerian international, Olajide Omotayo, also experienced a decline, slipping six places to World No. 193. He is now ranked 12th in Africa.
The latest ranking changes underline a difficult phase for Nigerian table tennis on the global stage, with both players struggling to maintain their previous positions amid intense international competition.
However, attention now shifts to upcoming international tournaments where the Nigerian stars will hope to rediscover form, gather valuable ranking points, and climb back up the world standings.
The rankings update arrives as preparations continue for several major international championships later in the year, offering fresh opportunities for Nigeria’s leading players to stage a strong comeback.
The recent downward movement highlight the urgent need for consistent elite competition and tactical rejuvenation for the nation's top talents. With pivotal international championships on the horizon, these athletes face a critical window to reclaim their elite positions on the global ladder.
