Nigeria Ready as African U-18, U-19 Volleyball Championship Serves Off in Egypt

Nigeria's boys' and girls' teams are set to begin their campaign at the 2026 African U-18 and U-19 Volleyball Championship after arriving in Alexandria, Egypt, ahead of the continental competition.

The Nigerian contingent departed the country on Sunday following a month-long intensive training camp at the High Performance Centre, as preparations for the championship entered the final stage.

The tournament, which runs until July 30 at the Pioneers Club in Alexandria, has attracted Africa's finest young volleyball talents, with 14 national teams already on the ground for the competition.

Participating countries include hosts Egypt, Nigeria, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, and Burundi, while the remaining delegations are expected before Tuesday's official draw.

The draw will determine the fixtures for the championship, which officially begins on Wednesday with an opening ceremony at the Pioneers Club.

President of the Local Organising Committee, MP Aida Ismail, said all arrangements had been put in place to ensure a successful championship befitting Egypt's reputation for hosting major sporting events.

She noted that the event would be attended by Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports, Gohar Nabil, Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia, President of the African Volleyball Confederation, Bouchra Hajij, and other leading sports administrators.

Ismail, who is also a Board Member of the African Volleyball Confederation and a member of the FIVB Development Commission, commended the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Alexandria Governorate for their support in ensuring the successful staging of the championship.

She described hosting the African U-18 and U-19 Volleyball Championship in Alexandria for the first time as a significant achievement that reflects the city's growing capacity to organise major continental sporting events.

According to her, the championship will not only showcase Africa's emerging volleyball talents but also strengthen Alexandria's credentials as a destination for future continental and international competitions.

The Local Organising Committee expressed confidence that the tournament would meet international standards as final technical, organisational, and logistical preparations are concluded.

With both Nigerian teams completing their preparations, attention now turns to the official draw and the start of competition. The championship presents another opportunity for Nigeria's young players to gain valuable international experience while competing against the continent's best.
