Nigeria Opens Selection Race for 2026 World Youth Scrabble Championship

Posted : 10 July 2026

Nigeria's search for its representatives at the 2026 World Youth Scrabble Championship will begin this weekend, with the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) staging its national qualifiers on the Woogles online platform.

The two-day qualifying event, scheduled for Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, will see young players from across the country compete in supervised online matches for places in Nigeria's squad for the global championship.

National Youth Coach Hassan Olojoku Abdulrafiu said the qualifiers would determine the four players to represent the country in the team event at the championship in Nairobi, Kenya.

He disclosed that the National Technical Director, Adedeji Khaleel, would communicate the detailed modalities for the exercise to coaches before the start of the competition.

Abdulrafiu encouraged all eligible players to acquaint themselves with the Woogles platform to ensure they are fully prepared for the online contests.

He also urged coaches and chaperones to provide a stable and conducive playing environment for their players throughout the qualifiers.

Besides the four players to emerge from the qualifiers, Nigeria is expected to field two Under-10 players as part of its allocation for the championship.

With about four youngsters vying for the available Under-10 slots, competition is expected to be intense.

The youth coach further appealed to coaches to sustain efforts toward securing sponsorship for the team's participation, adding that the federation would continue to monitor progress on funding arrangements ahead of the tournament.

Nigeria will head into the qualifiers inspired by its impressive performance at the last World Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia, where Abdulqodus Aliou finished runner-up overall, while Sophia Ekeruche claimed the Best Female Player award.

The 2026 World Youth Scrabble Championship is scheduled to hold from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9 at the Trademark Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, with Nigeria targeting another strong outing on the international stage.

The national qualifiers are expected to identify the country's brightest young talents as Nigeria seeks to build on its recent success and challenge for more honours at the World Youth Scrabble Championship.
