Nigeria Miss World Championship Ticket After Eighth-Place Finish

Nigeria's men's volleyball team finished eighth at the 2026 CAVB Men's African Nations Volleyball Championship after losing 3-0 to Ghana in the seventh-place playoff in Tunis. The result ended Nigeria's campaign with two wins and three defeats from five matches.

The defeat came one day after Nigeria suffered a 3-1 loss to Rwanda in the first classification match. Rwanda won 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19 to move ahead in the battle for the fifth-place positions. Nigeria's loss sent them into the seventh-place playoff against Ghana.

Nigeria had reached the quarter-finals after progressing from the group stage. Their strongest performance came against Algeria, when they recovered from losing the first set to win 3-2, with the deciding set ending 15-12.

The quarter-final against Morocco was another closely contested encounter. Nigeria won the opening set 25-20, but Morocco responded by taking the next two sets. Nigeria forced a fourth set by winning 26-24 before Morocco secured the deciding set 15-12 for a 3-2 victory.

That narrow defeat ended Nigeria's hopes of reaching the semi-finals and pushed the team into the classification matches. The subsequent losses to Rwanda and Ghana confirmed an eighth-place finish in the continental championship.

Nigeria's final position also ended its hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship in Poland. The African championship offered three World Championship qualification places, with the finalists securing two of them.

Hosts Tunisia reached the final after defeating Morocco 3-1 in the semi-final. Cameroon also won 3-1 against Algeria to book its place in the title match. Their final appearances secured two of Africa's World Championship places.

The remaining World Championship ticket was to be decided in the bronze-medal match between Morocco and Algeria. Tunisia and Cameroon were also competing for Africa's qualification place for the men's volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

For Nigeria, the tournament provided valuable experience against several of the continent's leading teams. The five-set battle with Morocco showed the team's ability to compete in tight matches, but the losses in the classification phase prevented a higher finish.

Nigeria's eighth-place finish leaves the team outside the qualification places for the 2027 World Championship. The result also highlights the challenge facing the national side as it seeks to close the gap on Africa's leading men's volleyball teams.
