Nigeria Make Winning Start, Turn Focus to Algeria

Nigeria’s men’s volleyball team began their 2026 African Nations Championship campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chad in their Group C opener in Tunisia on Wednesday.

The Zone 3 champions dominated from the start, taking the opening two sets 25-17, 25-17 before completing the straight-sets victory in the third set.

The result gives Nigeria an early boost as they pursue qualification for the 2027 FIVB World Championship and the sole African qualification spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Head coach Ryan Masajedi praised his players for following their instructions and said the team’s performance showed that their preparations had been effective.

“I am excited that the players played according to the instructions given to them. It shows our training programme worked out,” Masajedi said.

“They executed the game plan, and we had no issues beating Chad in our first match.

“We’ll shift focus to our next match against Algeria tomorrow (Thursday) and will not be carried away by the victory. We have to top our group to have a favourable pairing in the next round.”

Masajedi stressed the importance of maintaining concentration as Nigeria prepare for their next Group C fixture against Algeria, which he identified as another significant test in the championship.

The coach also thanked Nigerians for their continued support and urged them to keep believing in the team as the players work towards their qualification targets.
