Nigeria gains global archery influence as Abdulahi joins World Archery committee

Posted : 15 June 2026

Nigeria has secured a significant presence in global sports administration following the appointment of Nigeria Archery Federation (NAF) President, Mohammed Baba Abdulahi, to the Commonwealth Games Committee of World Archery.

The appointment was among five new nominations approved by the World Archery Executive Board (WAEB), reinforcing efforts to broaden international representation within the sport's governing structures.

The development was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Tony Nezianya, who described the appointment as a major milestone for Nigeria ahead of future international competitions.

According to Nezianya, Abdulahi, who also serves as the Deputy Secretary-General of the NOC, received his appointment through an official communication dated May 15 from World Archery Secretary General, Raul Calin, to Commonwealth Games Committee Chairman, Robert Fiddyment.

The newly constituted committee features representatives from different regions of the world, bringing together extensive experience in archery administration and development. Other members include Karl Balisch of Canada, Trina Roberts, Ainsley Ward of Scotland, and Virendra Sachdeva of India.

World Archery also confirmed that Juan Carlos Holgado will continue in his role as the federation's liaison officer to the committee, ensuring continuity in its operations.

In a statement, Calin expressed confidence in the newly appointed members and their ability to contribute meaningfully to the committee's objectives.

"We look forward to the appointed individuals contributing to the activities of their committee," Calin said.

The appointments come at a crucial period as World Archery continues its campaign to strengthen the sport's position within the Commonwealth Games programme.

The inclusion of experienced administrators from across the globe is expected to enhance governance, technical oversight, and strategic planning for archery's future growth within the Commonwealth sporting movement.

For Nigeria, Abdulahi's appointment represents another opportunity to contribute to international sports policymaking while advancing the development of archery both nationally and across the Commonwealth.

This landmark appointment solidifies Nigeria's rising profile within global sports administration and the international archery community. By placing an experienced administrator into a vital governing body, the nation positions itself strategically for future international success. The collaboration of diverse global experts promises to drive the growth and development of the sport across the Commonwealth movement.
