Nigeria Face Uphill Task After Round 6 Setbacks at Chess Olympiad

Team Nigeria will be seeking a strong response in the remaining rounds of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after both the men’s and women’s teams suffered defeats in Round 6.

The Nigerian men were handed a 4–0 defeat by Vietnam, while the women lost 3–1 to Austria as the competition entered a crucial phase.

The results leave both teams on six match points after six rounds, although their records differ.

The men have recorded three victories and three defeats, while the women have two wins, two draws and two losses.

For the men, the heavy defeat brought an end to a three-match winning run following victories earlier in the tournament, including their impressive 3½–½ triumph over Malawi in Round 5.

However, they struggled to make an impact against Vietnam, who secured a clean sweep across the four boards.

The result underlined the intensity of the Olympiad, where teams must consistently produce strong performances across multiple rounds to remain competitive.

The women also faced a difficult test against Austria, with the European side claiming a 3–1 victory.

Despite the team setback, Chiamaka Michelle Nwankwo has continued to provide encouragement with her determined performances during the competition.

Her fighting spirit has made her one of Nigeria’s notable individual performers and will be important as the team looks to regain momentum.

With five rounds remaining, both Nigerian teams still have an opportunity to improve their positions and finish the tournament on a positive note.

The scheduled rest day provides the players and coaches an opportunity to regroup before returning to action in the closing stages of the prestigious global team championship.

Nigeria will now hope to turn the disappointment of Round 6 into renewed determination as both teams pursue stronger results in their remaining encounters.
