Nigeria will begin its title defence at the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia, from October 22 to 25. The tournament will bring together 134 players representing 24 countries at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex. Nigeria has selected a 25-player squad for the competition, while Kenya has the largest contingent with 34 players, followed by Uganda with 30.
The Nigerian team enters the championship with an impressive record. The country has won 14 of the previous 15 editions, underlining its long-standing strength in the continental competition. Nigeria's most recent title came in 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda, where Oluwatimilehin Doko won the individual championship.
Nigeria will face strong opposition from Kenya and Uganda, both of whom have continued to develop their competitive Scrabble programmes. Pan African Scrabble Association president Adekoyejo Adegbesan has identified the two countries as major challengers, while expressing confidence in Nigeria's ability to defend its titles despite losing some players who have relocated abroad.
The championship will feature individual honours and the Best-Playing Country award. Nigeria will aim to retain its standing in both categories, relying on the experience and depth of its selected players as the competition intensifies. The tournament also gives emerging players an opportunity to measure their skills against some of the continent's strongest competitors.
Liberia is hosting the continental championship for the first time. Organisers have described the event as an opportunity to strengthen sporting relationships, promote Scrabble among young people and encourage wider participation in schools and communities. The host nation will also seek to use the competition to build on its silver-medal performance at the 2024 African Games in Accra, Ghana.
For Nigeria, the immediate objective is to extend its remarkable continental record. The team will need to maintain its concentration and consistency across the tournament as rivals seek to challenge the defending champions in Monrovia.
