Nigeria Eye Strong Return at African Volleyball Championship

Nigeria’s men’s volleyball team will seek to make a strong return to the continental stage when the 2026 African Men’s Volleyball Nations Championship begins in Tunisia on Monday.

Drawn in Group C alongside Algeria and Chad, Nigeria will aim to progress beyond the group stage in a competition that also serves as a qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Head Coach Ryan Masajedi said the team’s immediate priority is to secure qualification from the group before turning their attention to the challenges in the subsequent rounds.

The Japanese tactician, however, warned his players against underrating their opponents, insisting that every participating team will arrive in Tunisia with ambitions of making an impact.

“The players understand what is at stake, and we’ll approach each game as it comes,” Masajedi said.

“The first task before us is to scale through the group stage and then wait for our opponent in the next round.

“We’ll not underrate any team in our group because they are equally at the championship to make a statement.”

Masajedi also appealed to Nigerians to support and pray for the team as it begins its campaign, stressing the importance of collective belief in the players.

For Nigeria, the championship marks a return to the African men’s volleyball elite after the country missed the 2023 edition.

The team’s last appearance came at the 2021 championship in Rwanda, where Nigeria finished seventh after defeating DR Congo 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-22) in the classification match.

With a place in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualification race at stake, Nigeria will hope to combine a solid return to continental competition with a campaign capable of taking the team deep into the tournament.
