Nigeria End African Para-Powerlifting Championships With 13 Medals as Onyinyechi Sets World Record

Team Nigeria wrapped up a highly successful campaign at the African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships in Oran, Algeria, finishing with a total of 13 medals after another strong showing on the final day of competition.

Nigeria secured seven gold medals, three silver, and three bronze, reinforcing its status as one of the dominant forces in para-powerlifting across the continent.

The standout performance of the final day came from Mark Onyinyechi Gift in the women’s 67kg category, where she delivered a remarkable lift to set a new world record while also breaking the African record, further establishing herself among the sport’s elite.

Veteran champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo also added to Nigeria’s gold medal tally with a commanding victory in the women’s +86kg category, continuing her impressive run on the international stage.

In the women’s 50kg division, Nigeria achieved a podium sweep-like dominance as Ajiboye Rukayat claimed gold with a lift of 115kg, narrowly edging out teammate Anigbogu Chikordi Esther, who secured silver with a 114kg lift.

The championship once again underlined Nigeria’s strength, depth, and consistency in para-powerlifting, with the athletes delivering outstanding performances and record-breaking achievements throughout the competition.
