Nigeria, Egypt Secure Africa's Tickets to ITTF World Youth Championships

Posted : 30 July 2026

Nigeria and Egypt will represent Africa at the 2026 ITTF World Youth Championships in Turkey after emerging as the continent's top performers at the ITTF Africa Youth Championships held in Accra, Ghana.

The two table tennis powerhouses secured qualification following impressive displays across the various team events at the continental championships.

Egypt earned three qualification slots after winning the U-15 boys', U-15 girls', and U-19 girls' team titles, while Nigeria claimed Africa's fourth ticket by capturing the U-19 boys' team crown.

The successful campaigns ensure both nations will fly Africa's flag at the ITTF World Youth Championships scheduled for Nov. 21 to Nov. 28 in Turkey.

Reacting to the championship, ITTF Africa Deputy President Alfred Bagueka commended the improved standard of competition and the increased participation recorded in Accra.

"I am particularly impressed with the outcome of this year's tournament. More teams and players took part, making the competition tougher and more exciting.

"I can see significant improvement across all teams, especially from the lesser-known countries whose players contributed to the competitiveness of the tournament," he said.

Bagueka, however, urged African nations to build on the progress by producing more players capable of competing consistently among the world's elite.

"In the last five years, we had Omar Assar and Quadri Aruna among the best in the world. But lately, how many African players are in the world's top 20?

"We must redouble our efforts to ensure our players reach that level. I am hopeful these young talents can make their mark on the world stage," he said.

The qualification of Nigeria and Egypt further highlights the growing strength of African youth table tennis and reinforces the continent's ambition to challenge the traditional global powers at the World Youth Championships in Turkey. The tournament will provide another opportunity for Africa's emerging talents to test themselves against the world's best young players and continue the continent's upward trajectory.
